Biochemistry of eNOS
Endothelial cells, lining all blood vessels, contain the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), which catalyzes the release of nitric oxide (NO) from various substrates. Vascular endothelial-derived NO is critical to maintaining the vasodilator tone essential for the regulation of blood flow and pressure.
Increased expression of eNOS by its up-regulation causes an increase in available NO, which subsequently mediates vasodilation. Concomitant with eNOS up-regulation, cerebral blood flow increases, ischemic volume decreases, and infarct size (blood clot size) is reduced. Blood pressure remains unaffected.
eNOS Pharmaceuticals believes these critical characteristics will establish our products as pre-eminent therapeutics used in treatment of cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease, and ischemic stroke.
